What is Botox Cosmetic?
Botulinum toxin (Botox) blocks nerve activity in muscles. It is a prescription medication that can be prescribed by Dr. Wollschlager for a variety of reasons.
It is a temporary treatment, but repeated treatment can lengthen the amount of time it lasts. Dr. Wollschlager will inject Botox into a localized area, based on each patient’s individual needs. Botox can be used on patients age 18-65.
How does Botox work?
Botox has a wide range of uses, from cosmetic to therapeutic. Once injected into the affected area, a special protein blocks overactive nerve impulses, restricting muscular contractions. This relaxes the muscles under the skin, leading to less noticeable wrinkles, fine lines, and in turn a more youthful appearance.
If Dr. Wollschlager has recommended Botox for jaw pain, headaches, or migraines, he will inject Botox into your trigger points. Trigger points are essentially muscle knots in the head and neck from overactive muscles. The muscles that contribute to discomfort extend to the top of the head, down the neck, and into the skull.
Once your trigger points have been identified, Botox can be placed at the sites to alleviate pain. Relief from headaches, migraines, jaw pain, and other ailments typically happens within a few days and can last for months.
